Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) training teaches a proactive approach to workplace safety by focusing on identifying, observing, and improving employee behaviors, not blaming individuals, using methods like peer observations, real-time feedback (especially positive reinforcement), and data analysis to shift from reactive compliance to a culture of safe choices, reducing accidents by addressing the human element behind incidents. It involves understanding why people take shortcuts and empowering everyone to recognize and reinforce safe actions, using tools like checklists and SMART goals, to create lasting safety improvements.

The OCIMF (Oil Companies International Marine Forum) promotes Behavioral Competency Assessment and Verification (BCAV), a framework to evaluate seafarer skills beyond just technical knowledge, focusing on teamwork, leadership, decision-making, and communication to improve maritime safety, especially with SIRE 2.0 inspections. Training programs, aligned with IMO Model Course 1.30, teach assessors to observe these behaviors at sea or in simulators, using methods like role-playing, to identify gaps and provide targeted training, fostering a culture of shared responsibility for safety.
