Classified as blackwater, around 30,000 gallons of sewage is deposited into the ocean by cruise ships. Sewage includes waste from the toilets and the health facilities provided in the cruise ship. Such sewage is rich in bacteria and aigae adversely affecting the oceanic life-forms and the entire marine eco-system.
Any applicant who has successfully completed the MRNSKL-962 Marine Environmental Awareness (Blended) course will satisfy the following competencies, relative to marine environmental awareness only:
- "Ensure compliance with pollution prevention requirements" competency of Table A-II/1, and Table A-III/1 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010; and,
- "Monitor compliance with legislative requirements and measures to ensure protection of the marine environment" competency of Table A-II/2, and Table A-III/2 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010; and,
- Specific tasks of the National Assessment Guidelines found in NVIC 10-14 Tasks 15.4.A through 15.4.G, Task 15.7.A and 15.8.A; NVIC 12-14 Tasks 12.1.A, 12.2.A, 12.3.A, and 17.lA; NVIC 17-14 Task 15. lA.
